The Community Action Challenge so far…

Share

For my Community Action Challenge, I’ve decided to take part in the Mayday Mile Challenge in aid of the RNLI.

The challenge overall has three parts: research, practical, and then sharing in Guiding. Maybe it’s a little bit nerdy but I’ve really enjoyed the research phase! I’ve been looking into the history of the RNLI, the Lifeboat Saturday fundraising events that changed how we fundraise forever, the updates to life jackets and boat engines over the years and so much more. It’s absolutely fascinating stuff - I even learned about the flag design, which has hardly changed to this day!

I put together a small timeline of the work of the RNLI across history, reading the timeline on their website and actually taking the time to delve into some of the stories and learn about the real people involved in saving lives at sea. They’re a fantastic organisation who rely entirely on donations to keep them going, and they’re there for everyone who gets into distress at sea.

I’m not sure I’m quite so thrilled about the practical - walking a mile every day is a right challenge! I’m much more of a sedentary person these days but I’m looking forward to pushing the boat out (pun intended) and giving it a good go, all in the name of a good cause. If you see me in the month of May don’t be surprised if I start roping you into walking a mile whether you like it or not… looking at you, Bank Holiday Weekend mates!

I’m sure my lovely Guide Unit will appreciate laughing at some of the photos of me on a walk and learning about this phenomenal charity. I know I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned!
